Threads was conceived following the triumphant conclusion of “Miscast All Inclusive” at the Sue Townsend Theatre in Leicester. Originating from the creative minds at Williams Creatives, this project aimed not only to showcase their talents but also to shine a spotlight on their unwavering support for the LGBTQIA+ Community.
Penned by Joshua Taylor-Williams, Threads serves as a heartfelt homage to the LGBTQIA+ community. It not only delves into their struggles and resilience during the tumultuous 80s and 90s, amidst the HIV and AIDS crisis in the UK, but also celebrates their profound bonds and chosen families—a sentiment echoed by the tight-knit Williams Creatives team. The company decided to work with the Terrence Higgins Trust to raise money and awareness for their cause while preparing for the show.
The groundwork for this production commenced in July 2022 with the assembly of an all-female production team and the crystallization of the creative vision. Originally titled ‘The Best,’ a nod to its central themes and the enduring friendship of protagonists Marcus and Marie, the project swiftly gained momentum.
From its inception, Threads was a trailblazer. It marked the first all-female production team for Williams Creatives, introduced some performers to the realm of musical theatre, and saw the cast venture into a recording studio to film music videos promoting the show. Notably, it also welcomed Isla Singleton, their first ever junior member, cast as Marie’s teenage daughter, adding a familial completeness to the ensemble.
As preparations intensified, a crisis struck during the technical rehearsal on July 5th, 2023, when Alex Tomlinson, portraying Richard, Marcus’ life partner in the show, fell seriously ill and was unable to go on stage. In a remarkable display of solidarity, Matt Brown bravely assumed the role with less than 24 hours until opening night, salvaging the production.
On July 6th, 2023, Threads debuted to an eager audience, heralding the beginning of a remarkable journey. The overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and acclaim reaffirmed the significance of the production and galvanized Williams Creatives’ commitment to its future. Since then, relentless dedication has been poured into refining Threads, ensuring it reaches its fullest potential. Today, we stand thrilled to share this labour of love with you, our cherished audience.
